The Cytochrome System in the Cecropia Silkworm, with Special Reference to the Properties of a New Component
نویسندگان
چکیده
1. In the majority of tissues in the cecropia silkworm, cytochromes b and c are apparently absent, being replaced by a hitherto undescribed component which we have tentatively termed cytochrome x. 2. Spectroscopically, the new cytochrome is characterized in the reduced state by a broad and indivisible absorption band extending from 551 to 562 mmicro. 3. The enzyme can be demonstrated only in the larval stage of the insect and undergoes breakdown prior to pupation. It occurs in highest concentration in the walls of the larval midgut and resists extraction, being apparently bound to subcellular particles. 4. Evidence is presented, based on spectroscopic and manometric studies in the presence of various substrates and inhibitors, that cytochrome x is a single component which mimics certain of the properties of cytochromes b and c and of succinic dehydrogenase. 5. Detailed studies served to differentiate cytochrome x from the cytochromes b(1) and b(2) which it resembles spectroscopically. 6. On the basis of spectroscopic studies at the temperature of liquid air, it is concluded that cytochrome x closely resembles, and may be identical with, the component which Keilin has recently described as cytochrome e.

The prediction of compressive strength of travertines with special reference to laminae-orientation using index tests
In this research, different experimental techniques have been used to determine the strength of four types of travertines, selected from Hamedan and Markazi Provinces, west and central parts of Iran respectively. For this purpose, after sample preparation and assessment of mineral properties, the selected samples were subjected to physical and mechanical tests with special reference to two majo...
متن کاملThe Effects of Diphtheria Toxin on the Cecropia Silkworm
1. The metamorphosis of the Cecropia silkworm is accompanied by large and systematic changes in the insect's sensitivity to diphtheria toxin. 2. Injection of less than 1 gamma of toxin into mature caterpillars, prepupae, or developing adults causes cessation of development followed by delayed death 1 to 5 weeks later. 3. Dormant pupae, on the contrary, are resistant to 70 gamma of toxin and may...

The search for alternative ways of controlling sericultural pests has led to the investigation of plant sources for naturally occurring compounds which may have Insect growth regulatory, feeding deterrency, repellency and confusantcy characteristics. More than 2000 species of the families Asteraceae, Fabaceae and Euphorbiaceae are known that possess some insecticidal activity. Plants with inse...
متن کاملThe Effects of Diphtheria Toxin on the Cecropia Silkworm* by A. M. Pappenheimer, Jr., and Carroll
Studies on the metabolism of Corynebacterium diphtheriae have furnished evidence that diphtheria toxin is closely related to the protein moiety of diphtherial cytochrome b (8). These observations, in turn, have suggested the possibility that diphtheria toxin may exert its injurious action on the tissues of susceptible animals by interfering in some way with the normal functioning of the cytochr...
متن کاملFabrication of New 3D Phantom for Measuring Geometric Distortion in Magnetic Resonance Imaging System
Introduction: Geometric distortion is a major shortcoming of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which has an important influence on the accuracy of volumetric measurements, an important parameter in neurology and oncology. Our goal is to design and construct a new three- dimensional phantom using a 3D printer in order to measure geometric distortion and its reproducibility in...
